Beyond the stars: revisiting Abraham in the light of Islam

A talk by Stephen Hirtenstein given at the New York Open Center, 29 February 2008

Increasingly the Patriarch Abraham is seen as a great source of reconciliation in the three western monotheistic religious traditions. At the same time he has often been enlisted on the side of intolerance and exclusivity. This talk focuses on the universal human nature of the Abrahamic message, as so eloquently expressed by the Sufi master, Muhyiddin Ibn ‘Arabi, and the crucial importance his teaching has for the present era.

The speaker
Stephen Hirtenstein (MA Cantab) has been studying the work of Ibn ‘Arabi since the early 1970s, when he attended courses at the Beshara School in Scotland. He is editor of the Journal of the Muhyiddin Ibn ‘Arabi Society and one of the directors of the MIAS archiving project, which is building a comprehensive database and digital archive of Ibn ‘Arabi's manuscripts. He is a founding director of Anqa Publishing. He has lectured throughout the world and is author of several articles and books, including The Unlimited Mercifier (a spiritual biography of Ibn ‘Arabi) and translations of Ibn ‘Arabi's prayers (Awrad) and Divine Sayings (Mishkat al-anwar).
